The plastic is fed into the molding cavity through a gating system, where it then solidifies. The mold is usually made of tool steel, which ensures high durability and wear resistance under mass production conditions.

Injection mold design process – what are the steps?

The design of injection molds consists of several different steps that must be carried out perfectly. These are more or less standard. The first step is to create an accurate design of the component to be produced in the mold. This design should specify the dimensions, thickness and material of the molded part. In addition, at this stage it is necessary to decide what type of mold will be most suitable – whether single-cavity or multi-cavity molds. Then, the injection mold design needs to be revised to match the shape of the part to the specifics of the injection process and customer requirements. Often, the original mold design does not take into account all aspects of molding, so the shape of the part that will be produced in the injection molding machine is modified using specialized software. The next step in mold design is to analyze the flow of material in the mold and optimize the injection molding process. Each type of plastic used for injection molding has unique flow characteristics. Using specialized software allows the flow process to be analyzed in detail, which is crucial for both plastic and metal moldings. The final step in designing an injection mold is the preparation of comprehensive technical documentation. This includes information on how to make the mold such as CNC machining, polishing and grinding, the number of molding slots, the necessary parts of the gating system, temperature control methods, mold assembly and the system for removing the finished product from the mold.

  • Scanning the sample and preparing a 3D model of the workpiece – 5 to 7 days
  • DFM report – design changes and analysis for production – 5 to 7 days
  • Preparation of the 3D design of the injection mold – 7 to 10 days

What does the cost of an injection mold project depend on?

The cost of designing injection molds depends on individual project guidelines. Both the complexity of the part geometry, which affects the level of complexity of the design, and the number of cavities in the mold – the more cavities, the more sophisticated the design. The cooling system, sliders, lifters, and unscrewing mechanisms are also important influences, and must be properly designed to ensure process efficiency.

Frequently asked questions

There is no designer in the world who will do every injection mold design. Everyone has their own specialties and experience. We will do most designs, but not all. Just as we will not complete every order for every injection mold. Feel free to consult your order.

Yes of course, the designer will design the injection mold, focusing on suggestions from the customer.
If they are unacceptable, we will not be able to accept all of them, but mostly we come to an agreement.

If the mold is designed based on suggestions, and then we come to an agreement and compromise together, it is hard not to accept the design of the injection mold, because it is designed together with the customer.

We have not yet had such a situation. The injection mold design is also confirmed by the production manager, CNC programmer, CNC operator and tool locksmiths. Only after full approval does the injection mold design go into production. If the design itself is ordered, it is sent to the customer.
