Cold channel molds – what they are, types, applications

Table of contents

Cold channel molds are used in professionally managed industrial plants. They are used to efficiently carry out injection molding, during which thermoplastics play a special role. A cold-channel injection mold differs slightly from a hot-channel one. Among other things, we are talking about the need to use more raw material.

Cold channel form – what is it?

The use of cold-channel molds is a very popular endeavor, but it is important to be fully aware of the fact that reaching for them carries a higher consumption of electricity. Thanks to this, the process of plasticizing the material proceeds without any unpleasant surprises and ends successfully.

Cold channel mold leaves behind a so-called ingot. It is necessary to remove it regularly, which is the responsibility of experienced professionals on a daily basis. At this point, one would have to wonder whether it is really an economical solution. On the one hand, the entrepreneurs concerned have to prepare for additional recycling costs, but on the other hand, it is a cheaper option than in the case of hot runner molds, due to reaching for far fewer parts.

Cold channel molds – types, how are they made?

Currently available cold-channel molds can be divided into two basic types, namely single-plane and dual-plane split molds. The final choice will depend on, among other things, the needs and intentions of entrepreneurs.

The cold channel mold works with tunnel and slotted sprinklers, among others. They are divided into several different sections. At the very beginning, the thermoplastic material enters the mold by means of a nozzle, and the unheated channels are responsible for getting the plastic into the corresponding molding cavities. Next comes the cooling of the filler, the channels and the molded part. Later, the gating system and the sprue are attached to the final product and it is pushed out. As you can see, the whole thing is not very complicated at all.

Cold channel injection mold – application

As for the basic application ofcold-channel injection molds, one must bear in mind that they are used in all those places where the costs associated with increased electricity consumption can be amortized. This includes small batch production and in the production of relatively small-sized molded parts. The cold-channel mold is gaining recognition not only for its efficiency and affordable price of the mold, but also faultlessness.
